KARACHI: As gas crisis continues to affect Sindh, particularly Karachi, with prolonged hours of load-shedding, the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) announced on Monday that domestic consumers will get only eight hours of gas in a day. The hours would be divided to meet ‘meal times’ – morning, noon and evening, accordingly.
SSGC in a tweet said, “As per the prime minister’s directives, SSGC is ensuring gas supply to its customers during meal hours as per the given schedule.”
According to the schedule, the gas will come three times a day, meeting the meal times. That is: 6 am to 9 am in the morning, 12 pm to 2 pm in the afternoon, and from 6 pm to 9 pm in the evening. These congested gas timings have ignited outrage amongst the public. Further on the PM’s directives, the gas supply company says that it aims to ‘facilitate its domestic consumers’ by supplying the availability thrice a day.
Gas Shortage in Karachi
Karachi has been facing long-hour load shedding for past several weeks. No or low pressure in the gas supply has resulted in rise of alternative gas supply equipment. Several incidents were reported due to improper and misguided use of gas cylinders, resulting in fatal explosions in various regions.
A Karachi DHA resident reported that his area was facing gas outages even in summers, making it a non-seasonal issue in many areas. In Mahmudabad, a working woman added, that waking up early and making food has become tough. Often the gas does not come in the evening making the entire family suffer.
Rise of LPG gas cylinder
An awareness campaign was organised by Burn and Plastic Surgery Center highlighting how the burn incidents have increased in gas leak explosions, in recent times. The professor added that such cases have increased in winters due to inadequate use of indoor gas equipment. He also added that burn cases have increased by 50% due to the ‘excessive and careless’ use of gas cylinders in homes.
