ISLAMABAD: To cap the purchase of illegal SIMs, an updated version of the biometric verification system (BVS) has been initiated on Saturday. The system is known as Multi Finger Biometric Verification System (MFBVS) and will be used by telecom companies to strengthen authentication.

In a contract signed by National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and Cellular Mobile operators (CMOs) at the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). The new upgradation will restrict the ongoing sales of illegal sims used for various illicit purposes. The standard system has to meet the latest verification system set by NADRA and CMOS. The system includes multiple fingers authentication and check on ancestry background to either issue a duplicate or a new sim.

Adding more, the control has been shifted from the seller to the system which makes it more authentic in particular with the random choice of fingers by the system.

The meeting was also attended by Amir Azeem Bajwa, PTA Chairman Major General (retd), Muhammad Tariq Malik, NADRA Chairman, Dr. Khawar Siddique Khokhar, PTA Member (Compliance & Enforcement), and directors and representatives from Federal Investigation Authority (FIA) and CMOS.

Azeem Bajwa said, “The new system will combat fake SIM issuance and ID fraud, protect privacy, and strengthen the national security of Pakistan.”

The Chairman said that the newest system will help to keep forgery and scamming away. Adding more he said, that this is an intelligent system that uses a smart algorithm where the system decides which finger to be verified rather than fixed finger positions. The system will also hinder an attempt for illegal purchasing on the Sims.
