Attempted Suicide No Longer Punishable by Law In Pakistan: President Approves New Bill

ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi approved the Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill 2022 on Friday, abolishing the punishment for attempting suicide in the country.

The development appeared after the senate passed the amended bill which abolishes the punishment according to section 325 of the Pakistan Panel Code, 1860.

Section 325 read; “Whoever attempts to commit suicide and does any act towards the commission of such offense, shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with a fine, or with both.”

Now the bill has been amended after the approval of the President, abolishing the provision of punishment for those who attempt suicide.

According to media reports, bill was proposed by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and opposed by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI).

The President also approved the Foreign Investment (Promotion and Protection) Amendment Bill 2022, which amended Section I of the Foreign Investment (Promotion and Protection) Act, 2022.

Both bills were approved under Article 75 of the Constitution.
