KARACHI: On the directives of the Supreme Court, the Sindh Government had asked to recruit differently-abled persons in the government sector within two weeks on Wednesday. The court had also directed the process to start soon in the department within the period of four months, the two-judge bench headed by Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail ruled.
A petition filed by Ms. Sahib Khatoon and others inquired the provincial government for not filling the vacant positions for differently-abled persons. Further, the counsel sought the Supreme Court to order the provincial government to soon start a process of recruiting people with disabilities in various departments.
Jawad Dero, additional advocate general Sindh said the filling of the vacant position has been started in compliance with the laws and policies of each department. Dero added, that the deserving candidates will be selected via a process in accordance with the rules.
Five percent of the job quota is assigned to the differently challenged persons under the Sindh Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2018. The act states equality, autonomy, and respect for disabled persons. According to the statistics by Human Rights Watch, an estimation of 3.3 million to 27 million People with Disabilities (PWDs) lives in Pakistan.
Disabled persons in Pakistan have been facing challenges in many sectors of life whether professional or personal. The federal government runs on 2% quotas, however, the Sindh government has allotted 5% of the quota for the special persons.
A law was passed on 16th September 2022 in parliament to curb the growing discrimination and prejudice in the workplace against disabled persons. The milestone was taken when more than five thousand Pakistani signed the petition.
