KARACHI: Amid of winter season, the hike in poultry prices is a part of the routine in Pakistan, but in the aftermath of the 24.5% inflation rate, according to data of Pakistan Statistics bureau (PSB), a jack-up in chicken prices is a great jolt to the public.
The Karachiiets are continuously suffering at the hands of poultry sellers, price of the 1 kilogram (KG) chicken has reached Rs400 to Rs600 in the commercial hub of the country.
There is no updated list of prices issued by commissioner Karachi which may be referring to the actual prices of poultry and dairy items.
However, the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) said, “The delay in the import of soya bean and canola are the main factor of price hike”.
“Canola and Soya beans are major ingredients of chicken’s feed, the containers are stuck at the port, and we didn’t get clearance for 75 days”, says Association.
The Association said, “We are paying Rs4lacs per day in the account of demurrage charges.”
“These charges apply for the usage of container equipment inside the port terminal. Demurrage is billed per container and day by the ocean carrier, and the charged amount will vary per location and equipment type.”
Hence, the Association Demanded Prime Minister avoid the devastating situation for the poultry industry and take a notice of the issue faced by PPA.
Besides, Karachi is not the only victim of a hike in chicken prices. The Poultry sellers are selling Rs520/ KG chicken in Lahore as well.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that inflation, measured by Consumer Price Index (CPI), rose to 24.5pc in December 2022, on a year-on-year (YoY) basis.
