What happened:
Dieunerst Collin, a former meme celebrity, has a name, image, and likeness (NIL) deal with Popeyes now. The restaurant is a fast food brand in New Orleans.
Back story:
Dieunerst Collin is referred to as the “Popeyes meme kid” after a video of him, as a child, being disappointed in a Popeyes restaurant went viral. Collin has signed an NIL deal with Popeyes, so he is now ready to cash in on his reputation.
Getting ‘Popeye’s’ attention:
Collin tweeted on social media that he had transformed from the Popeyes meme kid to a high school football state champion, and the restaurant succeeded in hunting him down. Collin was a member of the 2021 New Jersey state champion East Orange High School team. He started a social media campaign to get Popeyes’ attention, requesting that they follow him on social media.
“Let’s get this bread(ing),” Popeyes’ Twitter account retweeted Collin’s tweet on January 10 to imply that a contract has been inked. Collin voiced his delight in an Instagram live stating, “I didn’t know the internet was this crazy. Never doubt the Internet.”
