The world’s most popular social media platform is thinking about selling usernames to generate more revenue.
Engineers at the corporation have been debating the idea of holding online auctions for usernames, often referred to as handles, since December of last year.
It is unclear, though, whether this plan will be put into action and whether it will apply to all accounts or just a select number. Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, is currently looking for new ways to bring in money for the organization.
The CEO of the largest social media platform Elon Musk has tweeted last month that Twitter would release 1.5 billion usernames by deleting non-active accounts.
This comes after his takeover of the social network in October 2022, when he tweeted that he would like to release accounts with attractive usernames.
Earlier, Elon Musk took charge of Twitter with a single leadership, fierce public opinion has shadowed the billionaire’s success. And Twitter is clearly upset with the change in policies. A recent poll put forth by Tesla owner, Elon Musk stated, “Should I step down as the head of Twitter?” The results showed more than 50% votes with a yes and 42.5% with a no.
Musk also mentioned that he will “abide by the results.” The Tesla and Space X owner seemed confused from the start with its Twitter takeover. He bought Twitter for $44bn and has fired several staff members. With more than 50 employees resigning after he took charge.
