ISLAMABAD: A local court sentenced Shahid Aslam, a journalist to judicial remand on Monday. Aslam has been given a 14-day judicial remand by the local court in reference to the case of disclosing General Bajwa’s family’s tax information to an investigative journalist, Ahmad Noorani.
After rejecting the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) request for an extension of the journalist’s physical remand, the court issued a judicial remand to the journalist. Aslam was presented in the court of Judicial Magistrate, Umar Shabbir, after he completed his two day physical remand that was granted to the FIA on January 14th.
Today’s Hearing
In today’s hearing, the journalist’s lawyer, Mian Ashfaque, the FIA’s investigative officer, and prosecutor, Zulfiqar Naqvi, were present. The FIA’s investigative officer informed the court that Aslam’s answers were “unsatisfactory” and that Aslam was not providing the passport for the laptop.
The laptop, however, has been sent to forensics in order to recover the password, according to the IO. On the other hand, the journalist had refused to give the laptop’s password.
Moreover, he (Aslam) admitted recovering data from the source of the Federal Board of Revenue of Pakistan (FBR), as said by the prosecutor. However, the FIA requested to extend the physical custody of the journalist so a further investigation could take place.
As per the arguments presented by Aslam’s lawyer, his client’s WhatsApp was in use when he had not provided the mobile’s password. A discharge plea was made by Aslam’s counsel. The court, after listening to the arguments from both sides, granted a judicial remand and adjourned the hearing.
