Despite heavy snowfall, the anti-polio campaign continued throughout Balochistan. According to reports, on January 18, volunteers for the anti-polio campaign travelled through snow to reach Balochistan’s northern regions.

Why it matters:
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif kicked off the national polio eradication campaign. The PM announced the commencement to combat the resurgence of polio cases. He continued by stating that despite all of the challenges, the polio workers carried out their duties with dedication and hard effort. PM Shehbaz further recalled how floods throughout the summer had hindered the polio drive.
About 20 cases of polio were recorded from Waziristan, the prime minister added, but thanks to persistent efforts, these were contained, controlled, and did not spread to other areas.
