What you need to know:

Rasmus Paludan, the leader of a Danish far-right political party known as ‘Hard Line,’ carried out the radical protest. This act of violence was preceded by Paludan’s announcement of a Quran burning “tour” during the holy month of Ramadan last year. Despite the presence of police, Paludan set fire to the holy book using a lighter, and delivered an hour-long speech in which he criticized Islam and immigration in Sweden.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the incident and called out the protestors for ‘hurting the religious emotions of 1.5 billion Muslims across the world.’

Mevlut Cavusoglu, the foreign minister of Turkey lashed out at the Swedish government as well. “It’s not about freedom of expression. it’s a discriminatory activity,” he said.

The desecration of the Holy Quran was denounced as “extremely disrespectful” by Sweden’s prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, as well.
