Famous Pakistani Cleric Says TTP’s Operations Are Haram

Mahnoor Tariq

According to Pakistani religious scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani, any armed activity against the government of Pakistan is ‘haram’ and ‘rebellion’ under Islamic law.

Why it matters:

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistani Taliban, has been waging an insurgency in Pakistan for the past 15 years. They fight for stricter enforcement of Islamic law in the nation. In addition, they have also been demanding release of their members detained by the government, and a decrease in the military’s presence at Pak-Afghan border.

What did the scholar say?

During a meeting in Islamabad, Mufti Usman spoke on countering violent extremism, radicalism, and hate speech. The well-known scholar was said, “TTP, is fighting against the Pakistan Army and are engaged in anti-state operations. They are rebels.”

The statement comes after terrorists stormed a police checkpoint in northwest Pakistan, on Jan 21. The incident killed two officers and injured one. Back in December, 2022, 33 TTP members took over a counterterrorism facility in Bannu and seized the building. They held the employees hostage. As a result, 25 militants were killed by the Pakistan army.
