KARACHI: On Jan 29, Shazia Marri, the chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) provided the transgender community with a Rs. 7000 stipend under the Benazir Kafalat programme.
This amount will be paid out every third month. Shazia Marri, who is also the Poverty Alleviation Minister, gave out the stipend at a ceremony for BISP’s admission of transgender people in Karachi’s Arts Council.
The minister asserted that up to 50,000 members of the nation’s transgender community had registered as Benazir Kafalat Program recipients, making them eligible for financial aid.
At the event, Murtaza Wahab, Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh on Law, said transgenders will also be a part of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’ City Council.
According to her, the transgender community shied away from approaching the data managers because of how society treated them.
She asserted that the government had a duty to care for the transgender community because they were an integral part of society. This is a step in the right direction for assisting the marginalised transgender people who, in addition to daily assault, also experience blatant discrimination, she said.
