MOSCOW/ISLAMABAD: Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Foreign Minister arrived in Moscow, Russia on an official visit with top Russian leaders on Sunday. Bhutto is on a two-day visit invited by Sergey Lavrov, the Russian diplomat.
Both Foreign Ministers will hold official talks in today’s meeting. The FM was also joined by Shafqat Ali Khan, the Pakistani Ambassador to Russia, Russian Foreign Ministers, and Embassy officials.

Prior to the last week, a Russian delegation visited Pakistan to discuss trade and bilateral economic ties. The bilateral relationship will enhance to improve ties and increase economic cooperation for both the country.
Pakistan-Russia Oil Agreement
The visit is followed by a Pakistan-Russian agreement that was signed in January 2023 to enhance cooperation in the oil and gas sector. The agreement was aim to increase bilateral trade, investment, and technology transfer in the energy sector, with a focus on liquified natural gas (LNG) and other hydrocarbon resources.

Pakistan has opted for a standalone position by opting to import Russia’s oil and gas, despite various western sanctions imposed on Russia over Ukraine. The country is facing an economic downturn, with low foreign reserves to back its economy. As a result, importing Russian oil without being bothered by other sanctions may help leverage its economic situation.
