On Feb 2 (today), Pakistanis took to their Twitter accounts condemning the United Nations Permanent Representative for Pakistan, Munir Akram’s misleading statement on Pashtun culture.
In his statement, Mr. Akram says: “The restrictions that have been put up by the Afghan government flow not so much from a religious perspective as much they do from peculiar culture of the Pashtuns which requires women to be kept at home.”

Denouncing the statement:
Ambassador M. Ashraf Haidari of Colombian Embassy of Afghanistan asked UNESCO to refute this piece of misinformation. He accused Mr. Akram of feeding the world against Afghanistan’s culture opposing women’s education, and continued how millions of Pashtun girls have gone to school and universities.
Mr. Haidari also claims Mr. Akram is avoiding to blame the extremist ideology of the Taliban. Digital Rights Expert Usama Khilji also denounced Mr. Akram’s claims, “It’s Taliban culture that Pashtuns have fought against for decades.”
Pakistanis all over the Internet are condemning this statement as they view it as ‘blatant misrepresentation of Pashtun culture.’
Executive Editor at Naya Daur Murtaza Solangi terms the PR as ‘Egyptian mummy,’ “Sheer ignorance oozes out of every word he utters.”
