Russian Cargo Arrival to Begin in April

Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Musadik Malik.

Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Musadik Malik, informed the Senate on Friday that vessels carrying Russian oil and petroleum products will start arriving in Pakistan from April of this year.

In response to a question from Senator Mushtaq Ahmed during the question hour, he stated that negotiations are ongoing with the National Shipping Corporation (NSC) for the transportation of Russian oil.

High-level meetings took place between Pakistani and Russian delegates in January 2023 to discuss the trade of petroleum products.

The discussions for a long-term contract to import crude oil, which would meet up to 20% of Pakistan’s crude oil import needs, are in progress with Russia.

Future meetings will address commercial terms, crude oil specifications, freight arrangements, and insurance coverage.

The details regarding the import of Russian fuel will be finalized by March of next year. Due to sanctions imposed on Iran, importing oil from Iran will be challenging, although some trade is currently taking place on a barter basis.
