SPI Data Reveals 2.8% Increase in Weekly Inflation Rate

KARACHI: The acceleration of inflation has exacerbated the problems faced by the public, as the prices of food items have further increased in the week ending on February 2nd, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The inflation, as measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), has increased by 2.82 percent in the past week, with food items experiencing a significant surge.

According to the data, the year-over-year increase in prices reached 34.49 percent.

The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) is composed of 51 essential items, sourced from 50 markets located in 17 cities throughout the country.

Exacerbated Prices

The data shows that the prices of Garlic (17.07%), Pulse Gram (7.10%), Bananas (4.75%), Chicken (4.37%), Pulse Mash (3.93%).

Pulse Masoor (3.91%), Mustard Oil (3.47%), Eggs (3.42%),Pulse Moong (2.33%), Sugar (2.32%), Vegetable Ghee 1 Kg (2.13%).

However, Rice Basmati Broken (2.12%), non-food items, LPG (17.61%), Petrol (16.22%) and Diesel (15.30%).

Meanwhile, the year-on-year trend depicts an increase of 34.49%, Onions (556.36%), Chicken (90.88%), Eggs (81.69%), Diesel (81.41%), Petrol (68.77%).

Tea Lipton (63.92%), Rice Basmati Broken (63.44%), Rice Irri-6/9 (62.36%), Pulse Moong (61.11%), Bananas (57.38%), Pulse Gram (53.18%), Bread (48.80%), Wheat Flour (48.35%).

Salt Powdered (48.14%), Pulse Mash (46.17%), LPG (43.76%), Mustard Oil (42.09%), and Washing Soap (41.96%).

CM Sindh Measures

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad said in a statement that the government is taken all measures to control inflation.

He directed all commissioners to take steps to overcome the issue of enlargement in prices.

“The list of meat, chicken, dairy, fruits, and vegetables should be displayed in all shops in cities,” instructed CM Sindh.

He said, “I will make a surprise visit to different areas of the city to see the list and get information from the people.”
