Former President Pervez Musharraf Passes Away at 79, to be Buried in Karachi

Former President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf has passed away, at age 79. He will be buried in Karachi, said sources.

Diplomatic sources have confirmed the death of former President General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf.

He had been receiving treatment at the American Hospital in Dubai for an extended period.

According to sources, a special plane from Pakistan will arrive in Dubai tomorrow morning to transport the body of Pervez Musharraf. The plane is expected to land at Dubai’s Al Maktoum Airport from Noor Khan Airbase.

Meanwhile, The death of former President Pervez Musharraf has not been officially confirmed by his family, but it has been confirmed by diplomatic sources.

Former President was born on August 11, 1943 in Delhi, and has passed away at the age of 79.

He assumed the position of Chief of Army Staff on October 7, 1998. On October 12, 1999, he removed former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and became the Chief Executive. He was later elected as the regular President of Pakistan through a referendum in April 2002.

Former President was elected as President for another five-year term in 2004 through the 17th amendment to the constitution.

After the December 2007 assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, the national mood worsened, and the significant losses his allies experienced in the 2008 elections further isolated him

He resigned on August 18, 2008 and subsequently left the country.

Musharraf’s plan to return to power in 2013 was dashed when he was disqualified from running in an election won by Nawaz, the man he had ousted in 1999.

In 2016, a travel ban was lifted, and Musharraf travelled to Dubai for medical treatment.

In 2014, he was charged for suspending the Constitution on November 3, 2007, and in December 2019, he was sentenced to death in absentia by a special court for high treason.

However, the ruling was later nullified by a court.

President of the country Dr. Arif Alvi, also expressed his regret on the death of former President General Retired Pervez Musharraf.

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhary stated, “Musharraf was a great person, his thought and ideology was always to put Pakistan first.”

“There is deep sorrow and grief over the death of former President and Army Chief General Pervez Musharraf.” said Elahi.
