ISLAMABAD: Minister of Power and Energy, Khurram Dastagir, stated that an agreement between Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is expected to be reached soon.

In a talk show on a private television channel, Dastagir stated that Pakistan is close to reaching a deal with the IMF, with both sides agreeing on several key issues.

Dastagir declared that it is not accurate that the fund has requested a reduction in the country’s defense budget.

Dastagir stated that the IMF has stressed the importance of reducing losses in the energy sector for the energy division.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of Kashmir Solidarity Day, Premier Shehbaz Sharif restated that the IMF is closely examining the subsidies of each sector.

Previously, during a meeting of the apex committee on the Peshawar attack, Sharif mentioned that the IMF delegation is currently in Islamabad and presenting a challenge to the finance minister and his team.

“The Fund has emphasized to Pakistan that it must get its financial affairs in order, and this includes increasing tax revenue and reducing losses,” said Dastgir.

He added that since the US has withdrawn from Afghanistan, international powers are not inclined to show leniency towards Pakistan.
