LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has suspended the notification of approved resignations of National Assembly (NA) members, which was approved by the Speaker of the House, Raja Parvez Ashraf.
Justice Shahid Karim heard the petition of 43 MNAs from PTI, who claimed that they had retracted their resignations before they were accepted.
The petition challenged the notification issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the Speaker of the National Assembly (NA) on January 22nd and January 25th, respectively.
The petition stated, “The speaker has no authority to accept resignations once they have been retracted by the individuals.”
“The speaker’s acceptance of resignations was in violation of court-established laws and was a politically motivated act of revenge.”
The petition claimed that the speaker did not inquire about the reasons for the resignations. The petitioner asked the court to invalidate the notification of resignation acceptance.
The court suspended the notification and reinstated the membership of all 43 MNAs.
On January 23rd, members of the National Assembly (NA) from PTI arrived at the parliament house to retract their resignations, but the assembly management declared a four-day closure due to an “electrical spark.”
PTI MNAs also protested against the decision to close the assembly.
