A parliamentary committee in Islamabad has directed the Ministry of Climate Change to take action against factories producing plastic bags and provide a list of shops and factories that have violated environmental laws.
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, chaired by MNA Nuzhat Pathan, expressed frustration over the widespread use of polythene bags in the capital city, despite a ban imposed in August 2019. The committee called for a comprehensive media campaign to ensure the plastic ban’s implementation.
During the meeting, the committee was updated on the investigation into an attack on the EPA chief and appreciated the cooperation extended by the DIG. However, displeasure was expressed regarding the absence of the CDA chairman and the Ministry of Law secretary, and their attendance was mandated for the next meeting.

The committee also raised concerns about the poor sewerage system at various restaurants in the Margalla Hills, particularly Monal, which was deemed to be causing ecological damage. There were differing opinions on the closure of these establishments, with some members suggesting heavy fines for violations of environmental laws.
RERA Act
Furthermore, the committee discussed the establishment of illegal housing societies in the federal capital and emphasized the need for strong inter-departmental coordination to address climate-related issues. The Real Estate and Regulatory Authority (RERA) Act and the environmental impact of housing societies in Islamabad were also brought to the committee’s attention.
In addition, questions were raised regarding the role of the CDA in monitoring housing projects and addressing the issues caused by slum dwellers in Islamabad. The committee stressed the importance of developing a comprehensive procedure to address these concerns and ensure effective coordination among government departments.
